Five Came Back (Netflix) – Premieres 31st March – Miniseries
Documentary which looks at five film directors, John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, and George Stevens, who during World War II went out to the frontline battlefields to document the war efforts.
The opening episode briefly looks at the directors careers in the years before the war, and then moves on to looking into the motivating reasons as to why they decided to head off to document the conflicts. The story is told by using interviews from current filmmakers explaining the directors history and mindset, along with using archived interviews from the directors, clips from the films they were producing before the war started, as well as stock footage of what was happening in the country at the time.
With the amount of footage shown of the five directors gives the documentary a more in depth feel that to similar war based documentaries that you find on AHC and the like. It’s a decent watch.
