Hibana: Spark (Netflix) – Starts 3rd June
Based on a novel this is a drama that follows a young comedian from Tokyo, where after playing a gig in Osaka meets up with an older more experienced comedian who he wants to learn his trade from.
After a night on the beer the older comedian agrees on if they other writes his biography, which he does inbetween working, doing Flight Of The Conchords style wrong gigs that are booked by an agent that knows nothing about comedy and working on his comedy duo routine.
It’s possibly the most Japanese thing you’re likely to watch, especially if you don’t get Japanese comedy it becomes about 50 minutes of listening to a parrot routine that steadfastly refuses to have a punchline. It’s still interesting enough to check out a few more, even if it’s to try and work out this version of Japanese stand-up.
